Pauline Erera

Professor Emeritus Erera’s research focus has been in gender and culture studies with an emphasis on participatory action research with communities using qualitative methods.

Dr. Erera has been an active teacher and international scholar for almost 40 years, first in Israel then in the United States. She developed social work programs and supervised trainees from Cameroon, Nigeria, and Thailand while at the Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. She has published many articles over the years on family diversity and enrichment as well as administrative social work practice. Over the course of her career she has given presentations at international conferences and universities around the globe including Europe, Thailand, South Korea, and Malaysia. She is a Fulbright Scholar.

She joined the School of Social Work as associate professor in 1996, and taught and mentored graduate students during her tenure who were interested in international relations and social welfare. She received Excellence in Teaching Awards from Cornell University, University of Haifa in Israel and the University of Washington. She received the Student's Choice Teaching Award for Classroom Excellence for teaching in the UW School of Social Work MSW Program. She served on various editorial boards for a number of journals. She was founder and co-director of The Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Group at the University of Washington.

Dr. Erera’s professional affiliations and accomplishments include serving as President of the Board of Directors for the Fulbright Association. She participated on the Roundtable Discussion on Women’s and Gender Studies Programs in the ASEAN Countries sponsored by the Women’s Development Research Centre at University Science Malaysia. She served on a Judges Committee for the National Council on Family Relations Anselm Strauss Award.

Dr. Erera retired from the School of Social Work in 2010.
