Assistant Professor Clara Berridge is the keynote speaker at a joint AARP and Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) event on “Adding Age to AI: The Importance of Representing Older Adults in Data and Design.” The half-day program begins on March 18 at 10 a.m. (EDT). The event is part of a collaboration between the Future of Privacy Forum and AARP to evaluate the risks and benefits for older adults in a digital world.
Clara’s virtual presentation will focus on elder care technologies as they relate to power and ethics. She will highlight common value tensions and risks of data intensive care technologies and suggest ways to mitigate these. Listen to the keynote speech here.
In addition to Clara’s keynote remarks, the AARP/FPF event includes two one-hour panel discussions. One is on the health and physiological needs of seniors as related to elder-specific technology and the other focuses on the ways that technology is used and experienced by older adults. Panel presenters include an ethical AI research scientist from Google, director of the Humane Robot Technology Laboratory from the University of Denver, and the director of the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech, among others.
Clara focuses her research on the ethical and policy implications of digital technologies used in elder care. She asks questions about how to promote sociotechnical practices in ways that do not marginalize, isolate, or diminish their participants. Across projects, she’s often thinking about privacy, power, and decision making about technology use.
