Congratulations to Katie Lamar, events and alumni relations manager in the Advancement Office, who was selected as the first recipient of the School’s Endowed Staff Support Scholarship.

The Social Work Staff Endowed Student Support Fund, established in 2008 by a generous contribution from a former School staff member, is intended to support staff members who have chosen to attend or return to school to pursue social work studies. Dean Eddie Uehara matched the initial donation of $10,000 to expand the level of support. The School Staff Council administers the fund.

Katie plans to use the $500 award to support her current studies in the UW Continuum College’s gerontology certificate program. She has a master of arts degree in museology, also from the UW. She also holds a bachelor of arts degree and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Arkansas.

“I’m so grateful to be awarded the Staff Support Scholarship,” said Katie, “and not just for the financial aspect of it. This scholarship truly displays the support system that is thoroughly embedded in the working environment here at the School.”

Through her studies, Katie hopes to research and implement programs for older adults using evaluation, relationship-building and facilitation. “I would like to help expand older adult programs in the community and see a decline in ageism overall,” she said.

If you see Katie at the School, be sure to congratulate her on being the first to receive this new staff scholarship!
