This May, we celebrate and honor the contributions of Asians, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AA and NHPI). These communities represent a wide range of ethnicities, nationalities and identities. Washington state is home to people from 42 diverse nations across the Asian continent and the Pacific islands that make up Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Although this month recognizes these communities’ collective contributions, the UW and the School of Social Work also acknowledge that the individual cultures, languages, identities and histories of these regions are unique.
Harassment, violence, discrimination, incarceration and expulsion has caused deep trauma to AA and NHPI communities, nationally and in the Pacific Northwest. Racism against AA and NHPI communities is not new and has escalated significantly during the pandemic. There are many opportunities to learn more about AA and NHPI communities, not only during May but throughout the year. Check out some of these resources for ways to engage across cultures.
