James Whittaker, UW School of Social Work professor emeritus, is the co-author of a new book, Revitalizing Residential Care for Children and Youth, which reflects the work of 49 scholars examining the state of residential care for children and youth in 16 countries.
The expert compilations address the critical question of how societies with developed welfare and social service systems assess current needs and future directions in their residential child and youth care sectors. The selected scholarship also examines historical concerns raised about the placement of children and youth in residential care settings, as well as identifying innovative strategies that offer new pathways for the integration of this often-neglected sector of service within the broader child welfare arena.
The book’s other editors include Lisa Holmes, professor of applied social science at the University of Sussex in England; Jorge F. del Valle, professor of psychosocial intervention at the University of Oviedo in Spain; and Sigrid James, professor of social work at the University of Kassel in Germany.
