Every spring, the School of Social Work Staff Council has the distinct pleasure of awarding a scholarship to support a current or former School staff member pursuing education in social work or a related field.

This year, the council has selected Jon Torres, who is beginning his studies as a School of Social Work PhD candidate in autumn 2024.

Jon is a distinguished alum of both the School’s BASW and MSW programs and has served as a research coordinator for Partners for Our Children since 2021. Previously, he worked as a student care coordinator for the UW LiveWell program and as a child-and-family therapist for the Asian Counseling and Referral Service in Seattle.

Jon plans to use the funds to support expenses related to attending conferences where he will represent the School of Social Work among many audiences, including academic peers and diverse community members.  “I often hold with great privilege the opportunities to represent SSW through my work and interactions with the broader community,” wrote Jon in his application letter. “I am a firm believer that collaboration is a key factor in serving our communities.”

We wish Jon the very best in his future studies and travels!
