School of Social Work leadership statement regarding the Lunar New Year shootings in California and the murder of Tyre Nichols

In the wake of the Lunar New Year mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, the faculty and staff of the School of Social Work empathize with the pain that so many are feeling. Since the year began, the number of shootings in our nation has already surpassed the number of calendar days. We are feeling grief and compassion for each person impacted by these incidents, and our hearts are particularly with the affected communities.

Co-director of Indigenous Welfare Research Institute named to national board

Karina L. Walters, UW School of Social Work professor and co-director of the School’s Indigenous Welfare Research Institute, was selected to serve on the national board of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare for 2023. She has been a fellow of the Academy since 2014.

School researcher receives Population Health grant to support mental health for college students

Professor Paula Nurius, UW School of Social Work associate dean of transdisciplinary scholarship, is part of a multidisciplinary research team working to adapt and evaluate a preventive-program delivery system to support better mental health for college students.
